What is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha, also known as Withania somnifera or Indian ginseng, is a hardy bush that originally comes from India or Africa. The plant is considered one of the leading Ayurvedic rejuvenators and stimulates the 3 major components of the body – “Ojas” (power), “Prana” (vitality) and “Tejas” (metabolism). Hindu healers attribute many positive properties to Ashwagandha: it prolongs lifespan, imparts new youth, sharpens the memory and the intellect, prevents sagging of the body, restores a beaming complexion and imparts the strength of a horse. Many scientific studies (in vitro and in vivo) have confirmed the efficacy of Ashwagandha against the effects of stress, anxiety, memory problems, inflammation, immune system deficiency, hematopoiesis (blood formation) and, in particular, against cancer.

What are the active molecules in Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha contains many important and powerful bioactive substances. These are alkaloids (isopelletierine, anaferine, cuscohygrine, anahygrine, tropine), steroidal lactones (withanolides and withaferine) and saponins (sitoindosides and withanoside) with attributed tonic, sedative, analgesic, anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects.

Why should you take Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha is an exceptional Ayurvedic adaptogen. Ashwagandha is effective against stress, regardless of the cause of the stress (physical, mental or emotional). It harmonizes endocrine secretions (especially of the pituitary and adrenal glands), strengthens the immune system during infections, is effective against depression and anxiety, accelerates tissue regeneration and strengthens the immune system. Ashwagandha also eliminates persistent fatigue, reduces irritability and helps alleviate the effects of chronic insomnia.

Ashwagandha improves memory
Ashwagandha increases cognitive abilities by accelerating the intracellular transmission of information and the via the regeneration of damaged nerve cell ends (axons and dendrites). Moreover, it was shown that these bioactive molecules (withanamide and withanoside) can prevent the formation of senile plaques, and as such can prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Promising anti-cancer agent
Ashwagandha prevents the uncontrolled growth of malignant cells. Withaferin A, the main constituent of Ashwagandha, deactivates specific proteins in cancer cells (vimentin) and thus slows the spread of cancer cells (metastasis) to other parts of the body. However, Ashwagandha not only slows the development of tumors (breast, central nervous system, colon and lungs), it has also been shown to be useful during radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
